Peace & Joy

ChristmasCactus

My ancient Christmas cactus is blooming profusely on granny’s sewing machine cabinet. Most of my African violets are blooming as well. They’re providing most of the holiday decorating around here. Lazy, I know. But they’re pretty! And not plastic.

Now we’re into the middle of the family festivities and the Holidays are in full swing. A lovely time was had by the immediate fambly at Milady Daughter’s Solstice party yesterday. Gifts were opened by the Beasties, turkey dinner (absolutely delish!) was consumed and delightful conversation happened among squeals and remote-control toys. More quiet visiting at bro-in-law’s happens this evening and then the Big Chaos at Ninja Son’s tomorrow. At least 20 family members have been invited. I’m bringing the butter tarts. More turkey ensues. Yum!

Here’s wishing every one of my precious friends and readers all the health and happiness, peace and joy of the season and throughout the coming year. Go ye all and make stuff! Even if all you make is someone smile.

And if you can, just find a cure for cancer will ya? I lost an old friend yesterday and another dear sweetie is very ill. It’s just not fair! <damselfly stamps her feet> There’s a cloud on my Christmas. Sigh. Nothing is ever perfect, is it? Sorry about that digression. Back to your regularly scheduled Holiday Happiness.

Oh You!! I cannot get my Christmas cactus to bloom, no matter what I do (or don't do)! I am supremely jealous! And, as much as I love African violets, I leave them to my mother because, around here, they just do not do well!

Louisa, wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful, blessed new year. Hugs!! (and cancer is never fair... my sympathies at the loss of friends) More Hugs!!

My Cactus finished blooming earlier this month & the cuttings on the window sill are now blooming!! Ev, they have to have at least 12 hours of dark to set buds. Mine stay outside until just before the first frost & come in loaded with buds! Glorious Feasting, Merry Solstice, Happy Christmas & Good Crafting to you & yours!

My Christmas cactus was glorious around Thanksgiving (in the States, that is). My violets are in bloom now, and yes, they are lovely. Your festivities sound like so much fun. My daughter is back in the area after finishing college, so I'm ecstatic to have her close by. Now, if only my son...!

I find so many holidays, and time in general, bitter/sweet. I am sorry about your friends. I miss those who have gone on, I cry for the loss of those who will be leaving shortly. I know it's part of life, but I get sad a lot.

But that being said, I'm also so happy to get hugs from people I haven't seen since the last holiday and hear my sister's/son's/grandson's voice on the phone. And I loved hearing about your holiday cheer!! Here's to a creative, meaningful 2013!

Yeah, what Jean said. She put it all so well. Missing those who have passed and being sad about those who are doing poorly. Delighting in the presence of those we love. And making connections with like-minded people like you and other net buddies. Being creative every day, or there abouts. Here's to 2013.

Such a lovely sentiment, Jean! Thanks for that.

BTW, your cactus that bloomed at Thanksgiving was probably a slightly different variety, also called a Thanksgiving or crab cactus but more commonly sold as a Christmas cactus. The leaves have points (like crab shells) and the flowers are curved rather than the rounded leaves and straight flowers of the "real" Christmas cactus. I have a couple of them too and they bloomed earlier and are finished now.

I forgot to mention to Ev that my cacti like their summer vacation on their shaded "patio" in the garden. They've bloomed so much better for me since I started putting them outside for as long as possible. But not as long as Sharon keeps hers out! ;)
